Late Night Screen Time■Nowadays,more and more people are taking their mobile phones to bed to surf the Internet,read e-books or play games.But researchers are warning that the blue light from their phone screens can stop users getting a good night’s sleep.That is because this type of light is like daylight,which gives the brain false information that it is still day time.■The blue light suppresses production of a brain chemical called melatonin(褪黑素),which helps us fall asleep.Researchers at the Lighting Research Centre are warning that looking at mobile phones for more than two hours“leads to a suppression of our natural melatonin levels as the devices emit (發出) radiation at short wave lengths”,in other words,they emit blue light.The researchers say,“Although turning off devices at night is the best choice,if these devices are used at night,the screens should be dimmed as much as possible and the time spent on them before bed should be limited.”■The researchers drew their conclusions after measuring melatonin levels in thirteen volunteers,after they had spent time viewing mobile phones at full brightness at a distance of ten inches,for two hours.Melatonin levels were significantly lower afer they had done this,than they were after the volunteers had viewed their mobile phones for the same time,but while wearing orange glass eye protectors,which cut out the blue light.■It is not just a good night’s sleep that could be disturbed by too much late night screen time.Researchers know that long-time disruption to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity,and even breast cancer.Blue light from the phone screens makes the brain think it’s still day time.( )
